How the EVAP Rebate Works

The Electric Vehicle Affordability Program is a federal initiative that helps Canadians offset the upfront cost of purchasing or leasing a new electric vehicle. The incentive is applied directly to your transaction by the dealership at the point of sale with no paperwork to file on your end after the fact. You simply see the savings reflected in your final price. The program launched February 16, 2026, and runs through March 31, 2031, with funding available on a first-come, first-served basis. Incentive amounts will gradually decrease over the life of the program, so the sooner you act, the more you can save.

Do You Qualify?

To be eligible for the EVAP rebate, both you and your vehicle must meet certain requirements.

Vehicle eligibility requirements:

Purchased or leased on or after February 16, 2026*
Final transaction value of $50,000 or less (no price cap applies to Canadian-made EVs)
Manufactured in Canada or a country with a free-trade agreement with Canada
Meets all Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
Highway-capable and intended for use on public roads (low-speed vehicles do not qualify)

Has at least four functioning wheels
Is a new vehicle being registered for the first time, or a demonstrator vehicle with fewer than 10,000 km on the odometer

Buyer eligibility:

Must be a Canadian resident (citizenship is not required)
Individuals are eligible for one EVAP incentive over the life of the program
Businesses and organizations can receive up to 10 incentives over the program period

*Transactions initiated before February 16, 2026, do not qualify, regardless of the vehicle’s delivery date.

How Much Can You Save?

The rebate amount depends on the type of vehicle you choose and the term of your lease. Here’s what’s currently available in 2026:

** Incentive amounts will decrease over the 5-year program period. The amount you receive is based on the date your dealership submits the eligibility assessment to Transport Canada.
